There are three different AC:FF versions for PSP

Which Version Should I Get?
Many people wonder weather or not they should pay to Import the international edition. The dicision really depends on the amount of challenge you want and are ready for. AC vets and people who are really good at designing Mechs and pay attention to strategic detail will blow through the Extreme Battle edition in a few days will begginers will have far more trouble. The international version may be too difficult for begginers and if you're not sure about paying for it, try renting Extreme Battle first and seeing how well you do (once you get into the regular league, the Bottom league is pathetically easy).
General Advice
I'm just going to cover some general problems people are having with the game.
Get used to pressing Triangle and Select while building your AC, Triangle lets you toggle detailed and non detailed AC/Part stats and select gives you definations for terms seen in the garage (like caloforic value)
Ammo Extentions only work with the weapon described. If they say Rifle the will only work with Rifles (not Sniper Rifles, Rifle(AST), Linear Rifles).
The AI will not alway use your back weapon, there are two ways to force it to 1) use an AI chip 2) Equip only back and left hand weapons.
There is no Ultimate or Unbeatable AC, if you're having trouble against and opponent look at the parts it's using and the level you're playing on. Remember, you have to be willing to change your design, every weapon has it's strenghts.
Can I make my own emblem in Photoshop and upload it to the PSP?
Nope. You can only make your emblem within the Armored Core game. Emblem information is encrypted within the DATA.BIN (17.0kb) file. TechniMyoko has created a texture editing program that can make the job easier. What it does is break down any precreated image/wallpaper to its individual pixels and gives you the color (#R/B/G) of each pixel. The grid can be resized. You can get it the latest version here:

How many chips are there and how do I get more of them?
There are 48 chips total. You get more chips as you progress through the league. As DarkEffigy noted, you can earn them in a number of ways. "You can get them by reaching a certain amount of total shots fired, distanced traveled, having reached a significant rank, or setting time records for different stages." You can even get them when you lose.
What are the default manual controls?
Go Forward = Analog Up
Go Back = Analog Down
Go Left = L
Go Right R
Look Left = Analog Left
Look Right = Analog Right
Arm Unit L = Circle
Arm Unit R = Square
Inside = D-pad Down
Change Unit = Triangle
